video assessment apps

In this section, I focus on applications that can help with video assessment of motor and / or sports skills.

clipstro

In searching for new video assessment apps I stumbled on this one called Clipstro.  Basically as you record someone, it takes small snapshots frequently throughout the video which remain on the screen.  I see this being used to show students the various breakdown of a skill.  See an example of how the video looks below.

In doing a search for movie creation apps on the app store, I stumbled across this app.  At first I was like "there is no way the app can do that".  I was wrong.  Take a look at the video below.  Basically you can record yourself up to 7 times doing different things.  The app is simply awesome!!!

In my 4+ years of researching and using apps, I think I am more excited about this app's potential than any other app besides Coach's Eye (See review at the bottom of this page).  First Jorge Rodriguez (A friend from Voxer & Twitter) alerted me to this app this past week. In my short time experimenting with it, I have to say "Wow".  Here is how it works:  Take your phone and walk in a 360 degree circle around your subject (they can either be still or moving).  Then you can go back and see a video that you can manipulate to view certain aspects of that subject you recorded.  I see using this in Physical Education to show skills in a 360 degree view.  Want to see how to perform a gymnastics balance from different views from all around a person balancing?  I can't wait to see how others use it in Physical Education.  By the way, right now it is free!!!

Ever wonder how fast you can kick a soccer ball?  Yes, this app can do that.  First off, this is an iPhone/iPod app only.  Set up your iPhone/iPod off to the side and focus the soccer ball inside the focus circle.  Press record and go kick the ball.  Go back to the app and readjust where the ball was kicked and that's it!  See my results below.

bam video delay app
(added 8/15/14)

Picture
My bad for not including this app sooner.  If you need an app that can delay video playback then this is the app for you.  For example, a student performs a gymnastics skill (forward roll0 in front of the camera.  After performing the roll, they go to the iPad and watch their performance that was just recorded but the playback has been delayed by a few seconds.  Great app for student self assessment.

SKLZ CAM APP
(ADDED 10/26/13)

Here is another great app to help with assessment.  Very similar to Coach's Eye and super easy to use. There is a user's tutorial on how to use the app which is very helpful.

video coach app

Record a student's skills and have the ability to analyze their performance instantly.  You can email the videos, split the videos up into video slices, and rename the videos with ease.  Great stuff!!!

coach my video app
(added 7/18/13)

Picture
Take or import a video and have the ability to analyze one video, or put two videos side by side to examine.  Draw on the video to highlight certain aspects of skills for students to focus on.  Not bad.

ubersense app
(added 7/18/13)

This app is very similar to "Coach's Eye".  In fact, if I had to pick between the two, I'd be happy with either one.  This one comes with a free cloud account for video backup.  Neat!

COACH'S EYE APP
(added 8/31/12)

Picture
In my limited experience with this app I have to say it's awesome.  Record an athlete/student performing a skill and be able to play the skill forward and backward or freeze.  Draw on the screen to show specific areas to focus on, enlarge the area to improve, and be able to share the videos with others.  It has a slow motion function as well.  Priced at $4.99 in Apple's App store.  Well worth the $.

SLOPRO APP
(added 11/8/12)

This is another video recording app like Coach's Eye.  This one can slow down a video, or speed it up based on your needs.  You can slow down video to 50% of normal, 40% of normal, 25% or normal, 1.3 x faster than normal, 2x faster than normal, and 4x faster than normal.  You can also do super slow which is great for instant replay at either 500 frames per second or 1000 frames per second.  I think the replacement refs for the NFL could have used this app.  :)  Highly recommended.
