IMGPLAYPRO APP
(ADDED 2/5/17)

Picture
In my endless search for apps that can help me to teach concepts in class, I came across this GIF maker.  Not sure what a GIF is and how to use them in class?  Go to this link on my site to find out!

Video stopwatch app
(Added 10/11/14)

Picture
Need to measure the time that someone or something has in the middle of a race? This app has you covered. Record or import a video and then set the starting time and the ending time within the video clip. As soon as that's done, the app does the rest.

minutes - multiple timers app
(added 8/15/14)

Picture
I have been looking forever for an app that can do the things this app can do.  First, I needed an app that could run in the background while other apps were running.  Next, I needed to be able to have alarms go off at random times during class.  For example, I needed an alarm to go off 4 times during class not at regular intervals.  This app can do that.  I use this app to "catch kids being good" during class.  When the alarm goes off, if students are following the rules of the class, students are given a point.  If not, no point.  Again, they don't know when it's going to go off, I don't know when it's going to go off.  I LOVE IT!!!

coach note app
(added 3/23/14)

I can't believe I just recently used this app.  It's a great app for visually showing students (or athletes) how to play a game or work on game tactic strategies.  You are able to put little icons on the playing area such as different colored shirts, cones, balls, as well as text on the screen.  You are also able to record your voice and make a video out of it.  The paid version gives you more objects to put on the playing area.  I have used the app to create diagrams for my lesson plans.  (See the "P.E. Lesson Plans" tab for an example).  Click on the short video below I made for one of the games I play in class called "Star Wars Tag".

red light, Green light app
(added 3/23/14)

Picture
How about a game of "Red Light, Green Light"?   Connect your device up to a projector or flat screen TV and get ready to play.  You are able to adjust the timing of the red, yellow, and green light length.  Click below for a great version of Red Light, Green Light posted on PE Central written by me.

fitness meter
(added 3/2/14)

Picture
Super cool app that measures a whole bunch of fitness related exercises.  Tests include flying sprint, sprint & shuttle, vertical jump, repetitions, and the beep test.  Click on the button to download this app.

Sprint timer
(added 3/2/14)

Picture
Very useful app for measuring and/or verifying close finishes to track and field or road races.  You can either do a photo finish or a video finish.  There is even a lap time section as well as a start sender option that can connect two devices together via wifi or bluetooth connection.  Click on the button to download this app.

stick family app
(added 1/19/14)

Picture
You know those stickers you see on the back of cars that show the family members in that car?  Well, there's an app for that.  Create your own "family" with your students!  You are able to change the colors of the family, make them into boys, girls, teens, babies, men, women, etc.  I have an idea to create some, print them, cut them out, and use them on a magnetic white board to show how kids where to go when they come into class.  The possibilities are endless with this app!!!

Stick Family Link

blurr app
(added 1/19/14)

Picture
This is a straight forward app.  Take a picture and be able to blur out any part of it with the touch of a finger.  Great when not wanting to show the background or if wanting to blur out the faces in the picture.

Blurr Link

twist helper app
(added 11/28/13)

Picture
Remember that old family fun game of "Twister"?  Remember how the spinner always got warped and didn't spin well?  Well, there's an app for that!  Touch the center of the app and it gives you a random color (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow) and random body part (Hand, Foot).  How about a game of "Tag The Target"?  Place four large colored targets on a wall.  All students are in six lines facing the targets about 15 to 20 feet away.  All students have a gator skin ball.  Touch the app and what ever combination comes up is the target color, and the body part used to make the ball get there.  For example, if the app shows "right hand blue", then all students next in line have to use their right hand to throw the ball at the blue target.  Cool, eh!

PE videos app
(added 11/28/13)

Picture
This is a great video collection app.  Categories include: Inspiration coaches, brain breaks, class fitness, team building games, minor games, icebreakers, wet weather games, warm-up games, and tag games.  Most come from YouTube but it's nice not to have to search the millions of videos on there just to find P.E. videos.  Great resource.

Sports Game Favorite Collection App
(added 10/13/13)

Picture
Although this app is a video collection of different sports, I have included it in this section. You can search for a sport, or you can select from the 31 they have posted thus far.  Great for showing students how a particular sports "should" be played.

YouSpin App
(added 10/13/13)

Picture
A great app for random selection.  Simply enter in the info you would like placed on the spinner (including color) and you're all set.  I put my students names on the spinner (yes, you can create multiple spinners) and select who will be the tagger, who will line up first, etc...

pe geek podcast App
(added 9/14/13)

Picture
A nice companion to Jarrod Robinson's blog.  Through this audio podcast he reviews applications that can be used in the Physical Education classroom.  I download them and listen to them when I have some free time.  Great addition to his catalog of great resources.

easy led app
(added 9/14/13)

Picture
I love using quirky things in class to get my student's attention.  This is one of those things.  I write a message on this app and it is displayed through a crawling message from right to left.  I'll use this to give instructions to kids as they enter the gym or put it at a station.  Not only is it cool to look at, I have instantly promoted reading in the Physical Education classroom.

footwork app
(added 9/14/13)

Picture
Do you love badminton like me?  Do you want to become a better badminton player?  If so, this app is for you.  Plug your iPad/iPod/iPhone into some speakers or put on a set of headphones and let the app train you.  It calls out random numbers that correspond to areas on the badminton court that you run to as you simulate hitting the shuttlecock.  You can adjust the time between each number called and there is a short demonstration video to watch.  I envision using this app using spots with numbers and having my kids run to the spot and touching it with their foot before the next number is called.

heads up charades app
(added 9/14/13)

Picture
Here's a great app to get your kids up and moving.  The teacher holds the iPad just like the picture to your left.  A word is displayed and everybody in the class has to act out the word.  Create two teams and have one person from each team be the "guesser" who stands behind the teacher on either side.  The only two students who can talk are the guessers.  The rest of the students act out the word.  First guesser to say the word gets a point for their team.  Change guessers often.  The app has numerous charade categories such as fairy tales, sports legends, and animal kingdom.  Great fun for all!!!

school doctor notes app
(added 7/18/13)

This app is a great way to keep track of doctor's notes students give you throughout the year.  You must sign up for the service for it to be used.

TEAM SHAKE APP
(added 4/25/13)

Picture
Quite possibly the best app I have ever used.  It allows you to make fair and even teams of all your classes.  Enter in your student's names by class, select the number of groups (or teams) you want, and shake your device.  Instant team creation!  You can program each student based on gender and ability.  Huge time saver and an app that I use everyday.

IMAGE SPINNER APP
(added 4/25/13)

Picture
At the close of each of my Physical Education classes, I use this app to "cool down" students to prepare them for life back in the seated classroom.  With this app you can select up to 10 different activities that are part of a spinning wheel.  For each activity you can take a photo and record your voice.  Touch the spinner and it goes round and round until it lands on one of the 10 activities.  I call this the "Spinner Cooldown" part of class and my kids love it.  Activities such as "7-up", "Flinch", and "Rock, Paper, Scissors" are some of the activities I use with this app.

BRACKET MAKER APP
(added 12/23/12)

Picture
Here's a nice app to create tournaments in your P.E. classes.  It comes with detailed instructions on how to create virtually any tournament you can think of.  Great app and a huge time saver.

Bracket Maker Link

MAKE DICE APP
(added 12/23/12)

Picture
Every now and then, I like to use different apps in class for warm-ups and cool downs.  In this app, you can write what is on the sides of the dice and then shake your ipad to roll it.  You can create a die that has warmup exercises and then roll it to see how many the students have to do.  The free version is more than enough for what I need, but if you want more extras like adding photos to the sides of the dice (which would be good for visual learners) then you'll pay $2.99 for the upgrade.  My kids love to see what activities they will be doing!

Make Dice Link

SCOREBOARD HD APP
(added 8/31/12)

Picture
Want a super simple two team scoreboard that everyone can read from across the gym?  Then this is it.  Prop this up against the bleacher or wall and just touch the scoreboard to change the score.  You can enter names of teams and switch from turning numbers to lightbulb scoreboard in the settings.  Also, in the lightbulb scoreboard you can program a countdown clock just like in a real basketball game with a horn that goes off when time runs out.  The only limitation to this app is that once you reach a score of 99, the scoreboard stops.  But for free, it's still a pretty cool app.

Scoreboard HD Link

giant timer app
(added 8/31/12)

Picture
Who doesn't need a timer in class!  This one is great.  Numbers can be seen from across the gym.  You can set either the timer or stopwatch mode with the ability to have a selected sound when the timer expires.  Free!
