health education apps

In this section, I focus on applications that focus on Health Education.

Curioscope App
(added 10/7/18)

Curioscope Website Link
As you all know, I love technology. Why? Plain and simple: Technology can help to engage students in learning. Let's face it, visuals catch people's attention, and 3D visuals bring pictures to life. This is where the Curioscope app and T-shirt (Yes, I said T-shirt) comes in play. Below you will see how the T-shirt arrives. After you unpack the shirt, download the FREE app via the App Store or Google Play and you are ready for an unbelievable AR (Augmented Reality) learning experience. Below you will see a brief video on how it works. Go get one!!!

(ADDED 12/6/15)

NOTE:  This is an updated review that was originally posted below.
Picture
New Update!  Here's what's new:
- More animations! Learn about the muscles that help you sing, talk, and scream. Watch as particles enter your nose, tickle nerve endings, and make you sneeze.
- Quizzes now included with purchase! Finished learning all about how your heart pumps blood? Test your knowledge and check out how much you learned.
- New background colors throughout the app. Minor bug fixes and enhancements.

eat this, not that app
(added 8/15/14)

Picture
Based on the book of the same name, this app challenges you to pick the food that has the fewest calories.  Share this game via Twitter or Facebook to unlock the Kids Edition, Restaurant Edition, and Drinks Edition.

the human body
(added 6/15/14)

Picture
Produced by Tiny Bop, this application is basic, simple, and incredibly fun to use.  I use it in my classes (with a TV projection) to teach my students the various parts of the human body.  Through a variety of very colorful and amusing animations, students get an idea of what each body system does.  Great fun.

3D brain
(added 6/15/14)

Picture
A great visual application to teach the various parts of the brain.  In my school district, I teach Health as well as Physical Education.  One of our lessons is about the human brain.  I show the students this application so they can get an idea of where each part of the brain is, and what each part controls.

my incredible body app
(added 4/28/14)

Picture
In my opinion, this has to be my favorite app to teach the human body to kids aged 8 and up.   The visuals are incredible and the audio playback as well as the videos are brief and very informative.  If you teach Health or the human body to kids, you need this app!!!

Chuggington: be safe app
(added 4/28/14)

Picture
For those who teach general safety practices, this is a great app.  There is a safety game, coloring pages, videos, and a link to a web source.  Target age is 5-8 years old.

vcell app
(added 11/28/13)

Picture
If you teach topics like cellular respiration, meiosis and mitosis, protein expression, or RNA expression, then you have to get this app.  The video animations are great and very informative.

physiology animations app
(added 11/28/13)

Picture
This app is just incredible.  Video animations show every kind of body system.  A great way to teach students about the human body.  On initial download you get some free videos and you can purchase addition video packs based on your need.  Just incredible!!!

drug free world app
(added 10/26/13)

Picture
Very cool app to teach drug prevention in middle to high school grades.  Tons of videos and info to make teaching this subject area easy and informative.

ATTACK OF THE BULLY BUG APP
(ADDED 10/26/13)

Picture
This is actually an animated book in app form that teaches bully prevention.  You have the option of having the book read to you, reading it yourself, or recording your own voice.  Great resource to teach bully prevention for students in grades K-2.

the adventures of doc fu - wash your hands app
(added 7/18/13)

Picture
This app is in storybook format to teach kids how to wash their hands, when to wash their hands, and why they should wash their hands.  Connect to a TV or projector and you have a nice little lesson on hand washing for an entire class.

The Adventures Of Doc Fu Link

germ scanner app
(added 7/18/13)

Picture
First off, the app does not scan for real germs.  That being said, it's still a neat app to teach students about the different kids of germs that "could" be on their hands.  There is a 5 slide hand washing demo that students can watch as well.

Eat and move-o-matic app
(added 7/18/13)

Picture
Have you ever wondered how much exercise you need to burn off a grilled chicken sandwich?  This app tells you.  It has a rolodex type spinning wheel that let's you select a food, and then an activity to burn off the food calories.  It then tells you the amount of time needed to burn them off.  For example a 419 calorie grilled chicken sandwich needs 1 hour and 31 minutes of dancing.  Time to move!

Eat And Move-O-Matic Link

stand up to bullying app
(added 7/18/13)

Picture
Great app to teach kids about the different types of bullying.  The app has 5 different video clips and then multiple choice questions about the video clips for students to answer.  It's a nice app but very pricey ($9.99)

Health ed buddy app
(added 7/1/13)

Picture
If you teach Health to middle or high school students, this app is a must for you to have.  Organized in this app are 20 different Health Education topics arranged in a powerpoint type of presentation for each topic.  It even includes interactive quizzes for most of the topics and videos for students to watch.  If you teach Health, get this app.

stats of the union app
(added 7/1/13)

Picture
This is a great visual for teaching students about the health of their country.  When you open the app, you see the United States with various colors.  Select "Risk Factors" and then select "Diabetes" and the map shows you where the highest concentration of diabetic people live.  Other filters you can select include smoking, overweight, high blood pressure, and no exercise.  I could go on and on, but this is definitely an app you'll want to have if you teach Health Education.
