UNPACKING PHYSICAL EDUCATION STANDARDS
(ADDED 7/10/22)
From the Human Kinetics Website...
For physical educators who have struggled with complex and sometimes vague standards, Unpacking Physical Education Standards Digital Resource is an ideal tool. The resource, created by three renowned veteran educators, translates state and national PE standards and grade-level outcomes into an easy-to-use, easy-to-understand format. The product offers PE and classroom teachers a series of performance indicators that are based on standards and that are easy to communicate to students and to parents, guardians, and caregivers. The resource incorporates 16 ladder graphics that depict the skill progressions as rungs on a ladder. These ladder graphics can be printed and made into posters (to be posted, for example, in a gym, multipurpose room, or school hallway). Teachers will learn how to use the ladders to set goals and measure the progress and performance of students as they move through the progression of skills and physical activities. These ladders will also help teachers clearly communicate to parents and caregivers what their students are learning and how the skills and physical activities might be practiced in after-school, home, and community program settings. In addition, Unpacking Physical Education Standards features approximately 25 photos and 6 video clips to show teachers and students the proper techniques for each skill to be assessed. Seeing proper form in action will help the students visualize what they need to do and facilitate the learning process. The skills they are learning provide the foundation for a lifetime of being active and all the benefits that come from a lifetime of physical activity. This digital resource is a tremendous tool for physical educators and for parents and guardians who are educating their child in a homeschooling or remote learning situation. It can also be valuable for use in Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs, and other after-school programs. It is a valuable supplemental resource for PETE elementary methods courses and for elementary education majors. For teachers who want a clear and simple breakdown of how to apply the PE standards to their programs—and effective ways to set goals, teach skills, and assess progress--Unpacking Physical Education Standards is the innovative tool they’ve been looking for. |

Technology for Physical Educators, Health Educators, and Coaches
(added 8/22/20)
When I was asked to contribute to the content in this book, it was a no brainer. I have been using technology in my classes all the way back to record players, cassette decks, TVs, and VCRs. What I love about this book is how its a "one stop shop" that explains all the current technology being used in Physical Education, Health Education, and Coaching. Here's more from the Human Kinetics website...
This text will help health and physical education teachers and coaches improve their abilities by learning to effectively use technology in the areas of instruction, assessment, management, communication, professional development, and advocacy. The effective use of technology as outlined in this book can improve student and athlete performance and assessment and motivate active and healthy lifestyles among students. An important distinction with this book is that it goes beyond simply discussing the technology tools—it helps readers understand how to use technology to improve instruction. Practical examples of how to use various technological tools are included for different settings and a variety of age groups (child to adult). Readers will learn about the effective use of technology in physical education, health education, and coaching. |
Dynamic Physical Education For Elementary School Children (19th Edition)
(Added 2/17/20)
This is the book that started it all off for me. Here is the description from the Human Kinetics website...
Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children (DPE) is the longest-running elementary methods textbook on the market, and this latest edition is just as pertinent, essential, and cutting-edge as ever. DPE does more than provide the foundational knowledge needed to teach quality physical education—it applies this knowledge with an array of physical activities that equip preservice physical educators to teach with confidence from their first day. Now, for the first time, the text is made even more practical with the free interactive website Dynamic PE ASAP, which replaces the previous print resource Dynamic Physical Education Curriculum Guide: Lesson Plans for Implementation. With the Dynamic PE ASAP site, teachers have access to ready-to-use activities and complete lesson plans, as well as the ability to build their own lesson plans from the provided activities. This resource puts a complete curriculum for quality physical education at teachers’ fingertips. |
Universal design for learning in Physical Education
(Added 2/17/20)
From the Human Kinetics website...
The practice of universal design—of making a product or environment accessible to all individuals—has been around for a long time. But, until now, that practice has never been explored in depth in the field of physical education. This groundbreaking text provides a much-needed link between universal design and physical education, extending boundaries as it offers physical educators a systematic guide to create, administer, manage, assess, and apply universal design for learning (UDL). Universal Design for Learning in Physical Education is for all physical educators—those who are or are preparing to become general PE teachers as well as those who are in the field of adapted physical education. This resource offers the following:

Some of you may already know that my Master's degree is in Adapted Physical Education. I absolutely love reading, researching, and implementing strategies to be able to include students of all abilities in my Physical Education classes. This book is awesome. Here is a description from Amazon.com...

Introduction To Teaching Physical Education
(added 8/7/19)
A book on Teaching Physical Education? Yeah, you had me at "Physical Education". By the way, check out page 194. I had no idea it was going to be added in there. Here's a description from Amazon.com...
Introduction to Teaching Physical Education: Principles and Strategies—already a popular text for students considering majoring or minoring in physical education—is now even stronger in this new second edition. Three strengths that set the second edition of this book apart from its competitors are its sole focus on physical education, the depth and breadth of physical education topics it covers, and its affordability. It features the essential content that students need to build a strong base of instructional skills and an understanding of the field—and it does so in an engaging manner to get students excited about teaching physical education. Introduction to Teaching Physical Education, Second Edition, delves into the theoretical, practical, and inspirational aspects of teaching physical education. Students can explore the field’s history, purpose, and concepts as well as learn teaching skills, examine instructional scope and sequence, and learn about the responsibilities of a teacher. They’ll also learn about teaching duties, motivation and behavior management strategies, assessment, lesson planning, technology and online resources, and careers in the field. |

(added 8/7/19)
I have long known about Sport Education. In the past I have used bits and pieces in my classes. Here is a description of the book from Amazon.com...
The Sport Education model was developed and introduced by Daryl Siedentop in 1984. Floorball Guru Primer Book
(added 4/21/19)
I'm going to be honest with you, I LOVE THIS BOOK. I love it so much I'm ordering a class set of Floorball sticks next year from FLAGHOUSE...
Growing up playing hockey (pretty much every day when I was a kid) when I saw this sport I was like "Oh YEAH!!!" When I found out there was a book that explained EVERYTHING about the sport, I knew I had to get it. What I love most about this book is how it's set up. Tons of visuals (see below) with lead up and skill building games that are easy to implement and play.

DIY Circus Lab For Kids
(added 12/23/18)
I first came across this book at the NHAHPERD conference in November, 2018. Jackie presented a session on circus. Now, understand something...I LOVE CIRCUS. I've been doing it for years in my Physical Education classes. Just when I thought I had learned everything about circus, Jackie's session and book blew me away. What I liked most about it was how she explains how to make all the circus equipment you would ever need by using regular household items. Watch the video below to see what I'm talking about. Then clink on the link to buy her book. An enthusiastic 2 thumbs WAY UP!!!

Chicken Fat
(added 12/23/18)
My first knowledge of the Chicken Fat song was using the record (Yes, I said record) in my Physical Education classes a LOOOOOOOONG time ago. After that, I converted to using CDs (Yes, I said CDs) in the early 2000's. I purchased the CD off the Kimbo Educational Website. Since that time I have uploaded the CD and have been using it on my iPod every since. I hate to admit this, but I did not realize there was a video and book that went along with the song (Thank you Twitter).
The book is very cute. Colorful illustrations make this book a must for any Physical Education classroom library. Buy a bunch and send them home with the students to perform the exercises written and illustrated in the book. The video is below. Click on the Chicken Fat Kids website link to the left to go directly to their website to order the book. Dismissed!!! |
My P.E. Teacher Is A Ninja
(added 10/7/18)
Talk about cute. This book written by Joey and Melanie Acker is a must have for any elementary P.E. teacher. Fully illustrated with hilarious content throughout, I see this being a student favorite from year to year. Also, this can be great addition to any P.E. teacher who has, or is thinking about having, their own P.E. library where students can checkout books. My favorite part? The fact that all P.E. teachers have eyes in the back of their heads. Right Billy? Below is a link to Amazon where you can purchase this wonderful and affordable publication.

The Kinesthetic Classroom &
Ready, Set, Go The Kinesthetic Classroom 2.0
(added 6/23/18)
I first learned of "The Kinesthetic Classroom" though Mike Kuczala on Twitter. After obtaining a copy of both "The Kinesthetic Classroom: Teaching And Learning Through Movement" (Published in 2010), and the updated version "Ready, Set, Go: The Kinesthetic Classroom 2.0" (Published in 2018), I began reading through both with great anticipation. First off, we as Physical Educators know the benefits of being physically active. Studies show that students who are physically active do better in school and are able to deal with things like stress much better. Enter "The Kinesthetic Classroom". These books are written mostly with the classroom teacher in mind. Simple, easy ways to integrate movement into the school day (Or when a Physical Education teacher has to use a classroom! ;). Here is a description for both books via Amazon: The Kinesthetic Classroom: Teaching And Learning Through Movement... Research shows that regular physical activity helps children perform better in school. This inspiring book illustrates how to integrate movement within classroom instruction, ranging from short activity breaks to curriculum-enhancing games. Readers will find:
Ready, Set, Go: The Kinesthetic Classroom 2.0... Kinesthetic education is your answer to brain-friendly fun! Discover hundreds of practical, clearly explained movements and activities that rev up your teaching and spark optimal learning. This extensively researched 4-part framework of activities promotes an energized learning environment where mental and emotional growth is met with physical, social, and cognitive engagement. With little or no equipment and minimal planning time, this updated guide will help you:
One of the things I enjoy most is how they break down the activities into a simple, easy to understand format. Also, they provide a section at the end of each chapter entitled "Tips For The Staff Developer". I can think of no better book to buy for a classroom teacher and no better professional development opportunity for school districts looking to "think outside the box" to get their students up and learning at all grade levels and for all subjects. But which version would I recommend? Either one. Version 2.0 is obviously the newer one, but you can't go wrong with either one. Enjoy! |
PE Metrics
(added 6/12/18)
I love assessment. I know, I know, crazy right? One of the things I love is finding new and up to date ways on assessing students based on standards and grade level outcomes. I bought the first PE Metrics book. I obtained the updated PDF that included the new 5 standards and grade level outcomes. This book includes the most current assessments from our national organization SHAPE America. In the past, PE Metrics was divided into 2 separate books. One for elementary K-5, and one for secondary 6-12. This volume includes all grades K-12. Here is a listing of the content taken directly for the SHAPE America website...
Do I recommend the book? Absolutely. It has the most current assessments from the organization that develops standards and outcomes for Physical Education. |
Fitness for Life - Middle School
(added 2/2/18)
I remember reading the first edition of this book back when it was published in 2007. I remember thinking to myself, if there was a textbook that I would buy to help my students learn all about the aspects of fitness, this would be it. In fact, I was in the process of writing a grant for a class set of the first edition when I returned to teaching elementary PE. Here is a short description from the Human Kinetics website...
A winner of the Texty Award for textbook excellence with its first edition, Fitness for Life: Middle School is even stronger in its second edition. Fitness for Life: Middle School is thoroughly updated to address the new national physical education standards, physical activity guidelines, FITT formulas, and USDA nutrition guidelines. In addition, it is greatly expanded and offers plenty of new material:
Once again, a great resource for all middle school Physical Education / Wellness teachers. Click on the link below to go to the Human Kinetics website. |
Strategies For Inclusion
(added 2/2/18)
The third edition of this book builds upon previous versions and adds great content to an already great publication for not only adapted physical teachers, but for any teacher who teaches a wide variety of abilities (which is all of us). This is a quote from the Human Kinetics website:
The latest edition of this popular text will empower you with the information and tools necessary to successfully include students with disabilities in your program. Strategies for Inclusion reflects the latest research and legislation, so you can be sure that your program is not only successful but also compliant with the goals and requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act. The text has retained and updated its instruction on assessing students, making placement decisions, developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs), and more. And it offers this completely new material:
Like I mentioned before, a great resource for all who teach Physical Education. Click on the link below to order directly from the Human Kinetics website. |

The Top 5 Books That Have Transformed My Teaching
(8/3/17)
Physical Literacy On The Move
(Added 5/20/17)
I first heard of this book on Twitter. Heather Gardner (@CatchingHeather) is a multitalented teacher from Toronto, Canada. (Hey, Rush is from Toronto! Heather, can you introduce me one day?) Anyway, when my book arrived I was super excited to dig right in. All of the activities are broken up into the following chapters:
Chapter 1: Low Organized Games Chapter 2: Personal Fitness Chapter 3: Gymnastics Chapter 4: Creative Movement Chapter 5: Running & Skipping Chapter 6: Throwing & Catching Chapter 7: Striking With Hands Chapter 8: Striking With An Implement Or Feet I love the way she organizes some of the skill based chapters. For example, Striking With Hands includes skills like volleying AND hand dribbling. Something I never thought of doing (until now). With over 250 pages and 120 games and activities, I would recommend this book to any elementary Physical Education teacher. I can already tell its going to be one of my top 10 all time favorite books. Click on the link below to purchase. |
Lesson Planning For Middle School Physical Education
(added 5/20/17)
I love lesson plan books. The reason? I like to see how others write plans compared to how I write plans. Every now and then, I'll find something unique to add to mine. That being said, when this book came out I contemplated buying it since I do not currently teach middle school (but have in the past). Then one day, someone of Voxer (Mike Graham) found a steal on Amazon.com. This book was listed for $1. You're not reading that wrong and it's not a typo. So I ordered one. Here are my thoughts...
The book is over 750 pages and it might be the only book you need to teach Middle School Physical Education. The amount and variety of sports and/or activities in this book are quite impressive. Activities include: Social Dance, Folk Dance, Team Handball, Ultimate, Soccer, Volleyball, Pickleball, Badminton, Whiffleball, Disc Golf, Recreational Target Games, Geocaching & Orienteering, Hiking & Backpacking, Adventure Activities, In-Line Skating, Mountain Biking, and Track & Field. Quite an impressive list. Click on the "Ultimate Lesson Plan" link to see an example of one of the lessons. Click on the "Human Kinetics" link to purchase this must have book. |

Lesson Planning For Elementary Physical Education
(added 4/17/16)
New release from SHAPE America and Human Kinetics publishing! I was so looking forward to this book for a variety of reasons.
First, the lesson plans in this book incorporate the grade level outcomes that were released by SHAPE America a few years ago. As old as I am (25 years of teaching) I still revise and re-write my lesson plans frequently. To see how SHAPE organizes their lessons was like "gold" to me. Second, I was hoping there was a section that gave suggestions on unit/yearly plans and what an elementary program should look like from year to year. With this book, I got that! Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Period. |
The Essentials Of Teaching Physical Education
(added 4/17/16)
A new teacher, I am not. That being said, this is what this book is designed for...or is it? When I first started to read this book, I realized that the content was more for student teachers or those just recently out of college. The more I read it, however, the more I realized the content was for virtually any teacher. Sure, it has sections on classroom management and how to develop a unit of instruction. I realized this book is for any teacher who wants to run a quality Physical Education program. Wonderful graphics and illustrations and it comes as a hardcover textbook. Highly recommended.

a teacher's Guide To Adapted Physical Education
(added 3/10/16)
For those who don't know, my Master's Degree is in Adapted Physical Education. The first time I read a version of this book was back in 1996 when I was pursuing my graduate degree at the University Of New Hampshire. Since then a couple of revisions of this book have been published. The current version you see here is the latest revision. I have to say it is incredible. Such a great resource for not only adapted physical educators but also regular physical educators as well. Click on the link below to order online from Amazon.com.

spark physical education
(added 12/26/14)
I became familiar with the SPARK Physical Education program about a year ago. In looking for lesson ideas on the internet, I stumbled across their website. The sample lessons on there were impressive. I loved the fact that many of their ideas and progressions mirrored what I was already doing in my classes. Not thinking more than that, I pretty much forgot about it. Fast forward to the Massachusetts Fall AAHPERD convention this past November. They had a booth there that had all the curriculum programs. In thumbing through the full program I shorty realized that I must get it. About 3 weeks ago I received the K-2 program and I have to say I love it. Everything, and I mean everything is there for you to run a standards based, quality Physical Education program. I am so sold on this program that I am getting the grades 3-6 program for next year too. The program comes in 3 different configurations:
1. Web-based program (Which allows you to access to printable PDFs of everything and MP3 music files for $199). 2. A 3 ring binder with just lessons with 2 music CDs (Which allows you to access printable PDFs of everything and MP3 music files for $299). 3. The SPARKfolio (Which has the 3 ring binder, music CDs, and laminated station signs for $399). I ordered the $299 package for K-2. I wish I had ordered the SPARKfolio instead. That would have saved me tons of paper and laminating time. Click on the button below to go to the SPARK website. |

physical education tips from the trenches

Although this is not a true lesson plan or activity book, I still pull this out to read because I do think it is so valuable. This is a description of the book from Amazon.com:
Physical Education Tips From the Trenches is a lighthearted and inspiring resource that presents 83 solutions to real-world obstacles that every elementary physical education teacher struggles with sooner or later:
-An all-day talent show that ruins your best-laid plans
-A mother who fears her child will get hurt in your class
-A fellow teacher who punishes her students by taking away PE time
If these sound like examples from your job, then this book's for you!
The author is a physical education teacher who's spent more than a decade in the trenches, and she shares her hard-won solutions in a sympathetic, engaging, and personable style. The result is a survival guide that is enjoyable to read and packed with sensible ways to improve your teaching. Physical Education Tips From the Trenches follows a consistent, easy-to-read format that makes it easy to find what you're looking for. When you're wondering “How can I handle this?” simply look up the obstacle. There you'll find mistakes commonly made when dealing with the obstacle; tips for handling the obstacle; a solution; and a relevant, real-life story to provide perspective.
Here are some of the book's many other appealing features:
-Humorous artwork
-Fun chapter headings
-An appendix that includes the author's own “kids-say-the-darnedest-things” list—it'll renew your love for your job
-Additional real-life anecdotes that illustrate what works and what doesn't
If you're a new physical education teacher, you'll learn about events that could—and probably will!—occur during your school day and how to handle them. If you're an experienced teacher, you'll appreciate the fresh, teacher-proven approaches to these challenges.
When you read Physical Education Tips From the Trenches, you'll not only find tools to help you provide the best possible physical experiences for your students; you'll also relate to the struggles, laugh, and find new inspiration to make your job more enjoyable.

If you are a Physical Education teacher and do not have this book, you should. And just because it says: "middle school" on the cover, don't be fooled. Any Physical Education teacher (from elementary to high school) can find a ton of great games and activities for their students in this book. I once met John Hichwa at a P.E. conference in N.H. a few years back at his workshop and he was great. Get his book!!!

This publication has to be one of my favorites. Don't look away if you don't teach middle school!!! The activities in this book can easily be done with older elementary students and high school students as well. There are worksheets, assessments, and reproducibles all included in the CD Rom that comes with this book. Units include Fitness, Social Skills, Juggling, Circus, Rhythms & Dance, and Team Games. Great book.

This is the Third edition of a program that is wonderful. All the activities in this book teach about the components of Health Related Fitness (Flexibility, Muscular Strength & Endurance, Cardiorespiratory Endurance, and Body Composition). All the activities are movement based that can be added very easily into your existing Physical Education curriculum. All of the "handouts" (usually station signs) come on the enclosed CD ROM for you to print out.

First, anything that Bud and Susan Turner put out is fantastic. This book is separated into months of the year that have different themes. Themes such as Dance, Striking, Sending & Receiving, and Muscle Up. Activities revolve around the themes and the activities are down right fun and engaging for all students. A good book for teachers who teach students in grades 2 to 6. The book also includes assessments, activity calendars, and motivational awards. Again, a great book!!!
Great Activities Newspaper
(added 11/8/12)
A long time ago, in a Phys. Ed. class far, far away...I subscribed to this newspaper. Published by Artie Kamiya it is one of the best things out there for K-8 Physical Educators. Every issue (you get 5 a year) is packed with games, dances, skill builders, etc... Awesome resource for new teachers as well as semi-older ones like myself. I met Artie at the New Hampshire and Massachusetts Aahperd conventions and he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet. Price is $28 and well worth the price. Click on the link below to go to his website.
